ParentAssess: Specialist Parenting Assessments for Parents with Learning Disabilities
ParentAssess is a specialist assessment framework tailored for parents with learning disabilities and additional complex needs, including mental health challenges, trauma, exploitation, domestic abuse, substance misuse, and offending histories.
Developed by Independent Social Worker Sarah Lowe, who brings over 30 years of experience working with children and adults with learning disabilities, ParentAssess is designed to be clear, accessible, and measurable—for both parents and legal professionals.

How It Works
ParentAssess uses a traffic light system to evaluate parenting capacity across five key domains:
1. The child’s experience of being parented
2. The parent’s daily living skills
3. The parent’s overall functioning
4. Specific concerns (e.g. domestic abuse, substance misuse)
5. Support networks
Assessments typically take place over 8–12 weeks, with six structured sessions and observations of parent-child interactions. The pace is adapted to meet the parent’s needs, and the support network is explored in depth—especially important for parents with learning disabilities.

We have ParentAssess-trained Independent Social Workers ready to begin assessments immediately. The framework can be used with or without the optional software tool, which streamlines the process and enhances usability.
Training for Professionals
ParentAssess also offers training courses to help professionals build confidence and skills in working with parents who have learning disabilities.
